So – neither Radwańska nor Bouchard will play in the final of Australian Open 2013. Semi finals went to Na Li from China and Dominika Cibulkova from Slovakia. It’s the first time when Slovak player plays in the final of Grand Slam event so it makes it even more special.
Li vs. Bouchard
So it was quite an entertaining match if we do not count first 14 minutes. It looked like Li will just steamroll over Bouchard as she was leading 5:0 (yes, 5:0 after 14 minutes). Her game was phenomenal, nearly every shot was a winner and also, in points she was leading 19:3 at one point if I am not mistaken. Genie started to play a little bit better from that point, she even made it 2:6, 2:0. But Li shown why she is number 4 in the world – she leveled the match, and at 3:3 she got a break. It ended up 6:2, 6:4 which made Na Li the first finalist.
Whatever happens now – Li will be no. 3 in the world (she will overtake Sharapova). If she wins – she will lose just few points to no. 2 – Azarenka. Eugenie Bouchard will be on no. 19 which is her career high.
Cibulkova vs. Radwańska
If I was supposed to use one word to describe this game, I would say: beatdown! Radwańska simply did not recover from the match against Azarenka and she was slow. (and by “slow” I mean “slow like she weighted 200 kg and played tennis for the first time”). Dominika Cibulkova won 6:1, 6:2. She was just dominating. Her game has change a lot since last year – last year she could make 2,3, maybe 4 shots before she made an error. She was as strong as now, but not so consistent. It slowly started to improve last season and now she is really great! With such game throughout the whole tournament she honestly deserved a place in the final. Agnieszka on the other hand… oh well. It’s not the first time when condition-related issue makes her lose a match. In Wimbledon she was supposed to win it all, but she lost in SF to Sabine Lisicki. She just could not play 100% in the whole match and Sabine Lisicki pulled it off.
Radwańska will be no. 4 after this tournament, Cibulkova will be no. 13 if she loses or no. 11 if she wins. Her current carrer high is no. 12.
Radwańska’s press conference “If there was one day off…”
Ok, she may be a little bit right, but both Cibulkova and Radwańska played the previous day. It was an hour of a difference between them so definitely Dominika could get back to normal much easier, but – Radwańska’s game is not suitable for Grand Slams. Why? She likes playing long rallies and sometimes her matches are very, veeery long (some over 2 hours, up to 2,5 hours), so at the end of the slam she is tired already. That is why I am sure that even “normal” Radwańska would be not able to cope with Cibulkova, who was really on fire!
Tommorow I will try to analyse the chances for the final both for Cibulkova and Li. This may be a very good final!
